Talking about Ethics

People find it difficult to talk about ethics – they see ethics as being about being told what to do.

Short-Term Volunteering

"I loved working with the variety of people, groups, other volunteers, and staff.  Corrymeela has some of the best people I have ever worked with in a location that positively radiates a certain tranquility."
-Past Corrymeela Volunteer

Corrymeela recruits many Short-Term Volunteers each year who join the community for a few days at a time, usually at weekends, and work alongside the Long-Term Volunteers and Programme Staff.  This gives them an ideal opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills from a new diverse group of people.  Their additional skills and support throughout the year are vital to Corrymeela.

Short-Term Volunteers engage with Corrymeela at a variety of levels.  There are those who live locally and help with specific tasks such as Reception, Housekeeping and Kitchen work.  For others, volunteering for a weekend involves either working directly with a group staying overnight or helping out with other important administration or maintenance tasks.

Regular training weekends are provided to help introduce new Short-Term Volunteers to Corrymeela's guidelines and procedures. Read all about one volunteers experience of her first Corrymeela Short term Volunteer Training Weekend. Linda's Story

"I've always been involved in community work and coming up to Corrymeela was a natural step. My dad volunteered here on a short term basis and my mum’s a nurse, so working with people and getting to know people for me is very natural. I’d been in Corrymeela many times and got involved in volunteering after participating in Corrymeela’s Youth and Community Project.Volunteering is a wonderful experience. You always get back much more than you’d expect and you have the chance to meet people that, either through choice or circumstance, you wouldn’t socialise with. Corrrymeela is full of buzz and an incredible energy. No matter how tired, wound up or frustrated I am, up here I get the space to think, recharge my batteries and laugh. Up here you can totally be yourself and be honest and contentment washes over you.Corrymeela has changed me. I’m happier, more confident, more relaxed, content and more understanding. I’m always welcomed like an old friend and listened to like all the important people. Conversations are honest and heartfelt and coming back is like coming home."  -Stephanie from Ballycastle (NI), Short-Term Volunteer
