Corrymeela in partnership with the 50th Anniversary of Civil Rights Commemoration Committee invite you to a panel discussion, hosted by Queen’s University Belfast, exploring the US Civil Rights Movement with reflections on connections to Civil Rights locally. There is no charge for the event.
Location: Emeleus Lecture Theatre, QUB on Thursday 7th February at 7.30pm.
Speakers: Dr Rip Patton and Dr Sybil Hampton veterans of the US Civil Rights Movement, Professor Paul Arthur, civil rights activists and Eileen Weir, Shankill Women’s Centre.
We welcome two activists from the US, Dr Rip Patton and Dr Sybil Hampton. Dr Patton is best known for his role in the Freedom Riders, a group of more than 400 black and white Americans who risked their lives by simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South, deliberately violating Jim Crow laws. Dr Hampton grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas and was a member of the second class of African American students entering Little Rock Central High School in 1959 as part of the process of desegregating public schools.
The US speakers will be joined by Professor Paul Arthur, civil rights activist and Chair of Civil Rights Commemoration Committee and Eileen Weir, member of civil rights committee and Shankill Women’s Centre
Dr Patton and Dr Hampton are in Northern Ireland for a week delivering workshops with schools and teachers. We are grateful for the funding provided by the United States Government through the Grants Programme at the US Embassy in London.
