Lent Walks with the Corrymeela Community

Various Walks around Northern Ireland & Wicklow

Our theme for these walks is solidarity with the planet, our aim is to appreciate and be sensitive to Mother Earth.


Walk 1:  Thursday 28th February – Corrymeela Centre and Ballycastle environs, led by Yvonne Naylor, mobile 078 1390 6079.

Meet at 10.30am at Corrymeela to visit the Croi where the Eco candle has been in residence for the month of February. Walk will commence on site and then into Ballycastle via the beach with a litter pick en route. Return to Corrymeela Dell to have packed lunch. Walk lasts about 2 hours.

 

Walk 2: Thursday 7th March – North Down Coastal path, led by David Duly, mobile: 078 8920 4744.
Meet at 11am in St Philip and St James Parish church, in Holywood, for a short prayer. Proceed to the coastal path and walk to Helen’s Bay to have a light lunch in the golf club. (NB Lunch needs to be pre–booked with David). Walk lasts 2 hours approx. Return by train to Belfast.

 

Walk 3: Thursday 14th March – Cushendun environs and river walk, led by Eleanor Duff, mobile 077 7602 7288.
Meet at 11am in the public carpark on the shoreside of Glenmona house, Cushendun. Walk along the Dun river, out to Cave, up to ruins of church, up to Knocknacarry, across a muddy patch and through a field to pick up river again. Continue to clachan of Dunouragan and along road up to Cregagh wood for packed lunch stop. Explore the ancient wood and return by road and river walk back to cars. Walk lasts 2–3hours.

 

Walk 4: Saturday 23rd March – East Belfast, led by Brian McLoughlin, mobile: 077 3829 2160.
Meet at 11am at the EastSide Visitor Centre 402 Newtownards Road (from Belfast City Centre take Glider G1 service alighting at Hollywood Arches, from where the Centre is a short walk). We will walk along the Connswater Community Greenway and the Comber Greenway to the Stormont estate where we will stop for packed lunch before exploring the grounds. The walk finishes at the  the Stormont Glider stop for access back to Belfast centre. Approx time 3 hours including lunch stop.

 

Walk 5: Saturday 6th April – Glendalough, Co Wicklow, led by Heather Godfrey, mobile: 00353 87 205 5937.
Meet for 11 am in carpark at St Kevin’s, Glendalough Centre. The walk  will be 11–4pm including packed lunch stop and visit to the Centre.  Walk will be mainly on tracks and will be 2–3hours.

 

Walk 6: Thursday 11th April – Murlough Beach, Co Down, led by Joyce Williams, mobile: 075 8537 7838.
Meet at 11am at Keel Point carpark, Dundrum to walk to Newcastle on the beach.  Walk lasts approximately 2 hours.

 

Solidarity with the Planet: where possible car–share or use public transport.

Lift a piece of litter on the walk.

Stop and stare – take a few slow breaths and  appreciate the views.

Commit to plant a seed, a bulb or a tree this Spring.

Wear warm waterproof clothing , walking boots and bring walking poles if wished.

Bring a packed lunch and flask.
