The legacy of the 1918 General Election in Ireland

This lecture by Dr Marie Coleman, will explore the result of the last all–Ireland general election, held in December 1918 after the end of the First World War. The manifestos of the main parties, the result of the election – nationally and in particular locally in Ulster, and the wider significance for Anglo–Irish relations will be examined. It will also look at the work of the first Dáil Éireann established on foot of Sinn Féin’s electoral success.

The event is being held as part of ‘Belfast and the World 1918–1921’ a project being delivered by Corrymeela on behalf of Belfast City Council as part of their PEACE IV Plan, which is funded by the European Union and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. The event is being hosted by a participating group, Hannahstown Cultural and Heritage Society, 23 Hannahstown Hill, Belfast, BT17 0LT from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Dr Marie Coleman is a Senior Lecturer in modern Irish History at Queen’s University Belfast. She is the author of a number of books including The Irish Revolution (1913). She was a contributor to the Atlas of the Irish Revolution and RTÉ’s recent companion documentary series, The Irish Revolution.
