Sport often reflects the divisions evident on the island of Ireland and beyond. It also provides a window into the identity, culture and values of society. The ‘decade of centenaries’ from 1912 to 1922 was marked by industrial, political and social unrest in Belfast and beyond. It was this era that eventually saw the partition of the island. This event will promote an enhanced understanding about the lives, perspectives and ambitions of those who lived through partition–era Ireland. We will consider what options were open to sporting bodies after partition and how these both shaped and were influenced by the political events on the island.
There will be presentations and a panel discussion chaired by Kate Turner (Healing through Remembering) with inputs from Dónal McAnallen, Neal Garnham and Katie Liston who will share their work on the history and development of sport in Ireland, including the impact of major changes on sporting culture in partition–era in Ireland.
The event is being run by Corrymeela as part of ‘Belfast and the World 1918–1921’. This project is delivered on behalf of Belfast City Council as part of their PEACE IV Plan, which is funded by the European Union and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. Thanks to this funding, there is no charge for the event.
The event will be held on Tuesday 17 September 2019, from 7.00pm – 9.30pm. Light refreshments will be served at the start of the event.
