The Big Lunch!

01 - 30 Jun 2024
Your community…

Corrymeela have partnered with the Eden Project in support of The Big Lunch annual get together, bringing people together in their communities to share friendship, food and fun this June.

The Big Lunch is the UK’s largest annual celebration for neighbours and community. Each June, it brings together as many as 9 million people for a moment of cheer and connection that can have a lasting impact on those who take part. The idea is simple – people connect over sandwiches, in front gardens, on streets, in alleys even beaches, anywhere we can gather safely, share cake and create new connections, have fun, and celebrate community.

But that’s just for starters, because behind the bunting and cupcakes there’s social impact on a mass scale.

These outcomes include stronger social networks where people know each other, feel safer and are more welcoming to new neighbours. There are so many positive outcomes such as reduced loneliness and many have gone on to volunteer locally and do more where they live. Illustrated by the 18 million new friendships the Big Lunches have helped to forge. They’ve given people a more positive view of their neighbourhoods; four–in–five participants feel a stronger sense of community pride and belonging as a result of taking part. And people follow up on that feeling – the events have raised over £50 million for community causes and two–thirds of former participants go onto improve their neighbourhood.

Joanne Boal, Corrymeela community member says The Big Lunch has made a massive difference to her neighbourhood and is now just one of the many things they do together since forming Rainbow Alley and they are now growing together all year round.

Gráinne McCloskey, Eden Project said:

“The Big Lunch is the UK’s annual community get–together that’s good for people and the planet, bringing friendship, food and fun back to neighbourhoods. Why not use yours to generate funds to support the excellent work Corrymeela does here in Northern Ireland?”

Could you host your own Big Lunch, bring your community together, and raise some funds for Corrymeela in the process?
