‘Jesus and Nonviolence’ – Rev. Dr. Johnston McMaster
At the 4 Corners Festival in February 2022, and again at an event hosted by Corrymeela, historian and public theologian Johnston McMaster presented a paper on Jesus and Nonviolence in Ireland.
We believe this paper deserves as wide an audience as possible, and are therefore grateful to Dr. McMaster for allowing us publish it on our website.

Crossing Borders: Brexit & the Book of Ruth
Corrymeela is pleased to make Crossing Borders: Brexit & the Book of Ruth available to the general public. This report comes with recommendations for those in political and church life as we begin a new set of relationships in this initial year of Brexit.
Crossing Borders was prepared by Pádraig Ó Tuama, and Glenn Jordan (who died unexpectedly in June 2020). It is based on a series of discussions –– held in various settings around the world –– using the Book of Ruth to look at issues of migration, belonging, community and stereotyping.
This resource was made possible with funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Community Relations Council.

‘Once the coronavirus has run its course, once we have returned to whatever normal comes to mean, and once we have let the good news of this coming Easter completely infect us, the challenge will arise to create a culture of courage.’

Creating a Culture of Courage – Corrymeela Sunday resources 2020
This liturgy is a response to our lament that public discourse often escalates into arguments meant to win the day rather than to build a better future. One–way rants online replace meaningful face–to–face exchanges. Polite conversation often implies refraining from discussion about topics of real consequence. We are inviting churches and other faith communities to help create a culture of courage where everyone (not just the heroic few) can engage in meaningful encounter and accommodate difference with respect.
These materials are intended for use on Corrymeela Sunday at Coventry Cathedral on 15th March 2020, the Sunday closest to St. Patrick’s Day –– but they are available for everyone and for any day.
We encourage you to join us in worship.

Prayers for the week of Brexit

Decisions about Brexit have left some feeling elated, others despondent, and many exhausted.
Whether we share a majority opinion or champion the voice of a significant minority, we all need to learn to live well together.
During this historic week, we offer prayers for peace, solidarity and understanding. We enter into a future with many questions, but we continue to believe that better relationships can transform our divisions, and that something greater than any of us unites us all.
Reconciling Christianities
The Reconciling Christianities project grew from a desire to test the possibility that as Christian faith leaders we could find a route to discussing our very real differences in ways which could ultimately inform the ongoing discussions about faith in contemporary Ireland.
The gatherings were a small group of Christian faith leaders from a variety of traditions and very busy lives who met once a month during October– December 2017 and then for a 24 hour residential in January 2018. Each gathering was shaped around a Gospel narrative and ended with an examination of a different prayer form.
We engaged in spirited discussion on the selected texts conscious of how our various traditions often threaten the other in our readings of the text. We sought from the beginning to affirm the credibility of each others confession of faith and to avoid the forms of reading which excluded. Each session began by posing a question from the text that highlighted our differences and then explored how we could hold those differences in a way that bore fruitful witness to our Christianities.
When the time for conversation was ended each participant was given time and space to reflect and to compose a prayer response to the conversation. These compositions were then read or prayed in plenary session together. Over the course of our gatherings we experimented with collects as well as prayers of confession, thanksgiving and petition.
These times together were characterised by hospitality and generosity.
The document that emerged is a form of project report in that it gathers together some of the elements of our meetings and conversations. In particular we have curated here the written prayers of participants across the four events. We are delighted and honoured that all our participants have consented to their prayers being published in this way.
The project was enabled by the generous support of the Center for Anglican Communion Studies at Virginia Theological Seminary.
Exploring Brexit through the lens of Ruth
Corrymeela is delighted to make this material available as part of our desire to place the bible text right in the middle of the most difficult and profound issues in the public square. We are passionately committed to reading the bible in this way, and it is a source of genuine wonder to us that this ancient text can play an active and stimulating role in informing and preparing us for this future.
We want to know not just whether or not it was effective but also about the nature of the discussions stimulated by it.

What kind of a society do we want post–Brexit? And above all, as people and communities of faith, how should we now respond?
