West Papuan Activists Visit Corrymeela for Learning Exchange in Belfast
02 Nov 2026
Corrymeela was honoured to host a small group of activists from West Papua during their recent visit to Europe.
The delegation included representatives from a range of non–governmental organisations working on indigenous rights, freedom of expression, women’s issues and the promotion of indigenous culture through art and community activism.
During a learning exchange at Corrymeela’s Belfast office, the visitors shared their experiences of life in West Papua and reflected on the ongoing challenges facing indigenous communities. Discussions explored the region’s history of conflict, the impact of displacement on indigenous peoples, and the continuing efforts of local organisations to advocate for human rights, cultural preservation and self–determination.
The gathering brought together West Papuan activists alongside community and peacebuilders from Corrymeela and other organisations across Belfast. The exchange provided an opportunity to learn from one another’s experiences, build relationships and deepen understanding of struggles for justice, dignity and peace in different contexts.
Following their time with Corrymeela, the delegation travelled to Dublin where they visited Áras an Uachtaráin and met with President Catherine Connolly.
We are grateful to our guests for sharing their stories, insights and experiences, and for the opportunity to listen, learn and stand in solidarity with communities working to protect human rights, indigenous cultures and democratic freedoms.
