14 Apr 2017

Statement from Corrymeela.

danrooneyWe were saddened to hear of the death of Dan Rooney today. The former US Ambassador to Ireland was a supporter of Corrymeela and many other organisations committed to peace and reconciliation. In 1976 along with Sir Anthony O’Reilly he set up the charity which eventually became the Ireland Funds and has raised millions for reconciliation work.

Corrymeela patron and current Ireland Funds Chairman John Fitzpatrick said that he was true gentleman.

“The work of the Ireland Funds is his legacy and Ireland is a better place because of him. Thousands have benefited from his care and concern.”

Corrymeela Executive Director Colin Craig also paid tribute:

“We were honoured to work with Dan Rooney over many years and to welcome him and other members of his family to our residential centre in Ballycastle. His personal support  and the legacy of the Ireland Funds have made a difference in our work and impacted hundreds of groups that we work with.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time.
