The Interfaith & Belief Project

The Belfast PEACEPLUS Interfaith and Belief Project brings people of different faiths, beliefs and backgrounds together to build trust, understanding and practical cooperation across the city, especially in communities shaped by division and change. It works across 3 connected streams:

Stream 1: Education & Awareness

Helping young people build confidence and skills to engage respectfully with those who are different from themselves. Adults can engage too, through café–style conversations, a public exhibition and an interfaith & belief walking tour of Belfast city centre.

Stream 2: Unity & Peace Welcome Programme

Highlighting the vital work carried out by faith and belief groups and making this more visible and connected. A church running a community meal can help a Hindu mandir to start its own. A migrant family can be signposted to a faith centre to feel welcome, improve English and build local connections.

Stream 3: Celebrating Faith Festivals

Finding themes between faith and belief festivals and celebrating these as shared moments of hospitality and social responsibility, bringing together communities otherwise unlikely to meet. Our first event explored shared themes linking Imbolc / St Brigid’s Day and the Jewish festival of Tu BiShvat, each marking aspects of hope, renewal and care for the earth.

Website

Rooted in Belfast’s lived realities, the programme creates inclusive, “brave” spaces where difference is not glossed over but engaged with constructively, helping people move beyond parallel lives towards a more connected and confident city.

The Belfast Local Community Action Plan is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
