Stories of Courage from Northern Ireland

As a young person, this film really opened my eyes and helped me realise how bad the troubles actually were. Often we aren’t told the whole story and are protected from our past, even though the past is how we learn for the future.

UP Standing– Stories of courage from Northern Ireland is a film featuring ten diverse stories of people who stood up to violence, discrimination or prejudice in Northern Ireland. It provides a window into often untold stories of courage that individuals have shown in the context of a divided and often violent society. The film is accompanied by a storybook featuring transcriptions of the ten stories plus six additional unfilmed stories and an Educators’ guide to support classroom use.

The film can be watched as a whole film (running time 45 mins) or as individual stories. For use in educational settings we would recommend a focus on individual stories. The Educators’ guide is available for download below and provides a range of activities to support reflection.
