Lent Walks 2017 (Save the Dates!)

Throughout Northern Ireland

lentSome Corrymeela Community Members are again organising a series of Lent Walks.

You are warmly invited to join them on the following Thursdays:

9th March – Breen Wood, Glenshesk commencing at the Corrymeela Centre
16th March – The Sperrins
23rd March – Hilltown to Rostrevor
30th March – Glens of Antrim (Cushendun)
and on (Saturday) 8th April – Divis/Black Mountain
The overall theme this year is Care for the Earth.

PLEASE NOTE for all walks – please bring a Packed Lunch and contact the relevant walk leader prior to the walk.

Walk 1 – Thursday 9th March, Corrymeela Centre and Breen Wood
Starting at 10.30am and ending at 3.30pm (approx.)
Meeting at our reception area at Corrymeela Ballycastle.
This Pilgrimage Walk around our site will stop at stations for reflection.
12.30pm Picnic lunch (please bring your own).
1pm Carpool and drive to Breen Wood, Glenshesk, then walk through this ancient oak wood until 3pm – return to Corrymeela.

Walk 2 – Thursday 16th March, Sperrins – Carntogher summit
Starting at 10am and ending at 3.30pm (approx.) at Granaghan RC Church on Maghera Rd.
Meeting at Killelagh Church of Ireland, Swatragh for a short prayer service and to arrange lifts to the start of the walk.
The starting point is Slaghtneill, the walk route is to Emigrants Cairn at the top of Carntogher, Moneyoran Hill and then along tracks and minor roads back to Swatragh via the townlands of Corlacky and Tirhugh to Granaghan Roman Catholic church on Maghera Road for a prayer of thanks and farewell.
More info – This walk is approx. 8 miles and involves some rough mountain terrain of heather and bog. It is a delightful walk but a good level of fitness is required and some extra warm clothing, hat and gloves, a hot drink as well as walking boots, sticks and waterproof gear. This is a good work–out for body and soul in the more remote regions of the west!

Walk 3 – Thursday 23rd March Mourne Walk – Hilltown to Kilbroney
Starting at 11am (coffee/tea) and finishing at 3.15pm approx.
Meeting at The Square, Hilltown and and continuing to Leitrim Lodge Car Park, finishing at the Benedictine Monastery, Kilbroney. This walk is approximately 5 miles (mainly downhill) on mountain tracks (walking shoes/boots recommended). We will join the Benedictine Community for Service of None at 2.15 followed by a cup of tea.

Walk 4 – Thursday 30th March Glens of Antrim – Cushendun and Cregagh Wood
Starting at 11am and ending at 4pm (approx.)
Meeting at the Public car park in Cushendun in front of Glenmona House, beside the beach.
This walk is approximately 5 miles and begins in the grounds of Glenmona with a visit to the recently restored Church of Ireland for a short prayer. The route continues along tracks, riverside, then up a steep incline on road (for about 10mins ) to Cregagh native wood where we will picnic with the red squirrels. We will visit a Mass rock and continue to St Patrick’s Roman Catholic chapel for a quiet visit and prayer. The return journey is via the road to Cushendun village, along to the Caves, beach and back to cars.

Walk 5 – Saturday 8th April Belfast– Divis and Black Mountain
Starting at 11am and ending at 3pm (approx.)
Meeting at the National Trust car park, Divis Rd, Belfast BT17 0NG
This is a circular walk of approx 7 miles on rough paths to the summits of Black Mountain and Divis, the highest point in the Belfast hills. There is one short steep uphill section but also spectacular views to enjoy in good weather! A cafe provides a welcome stop about 800 metres from the start/finish. The walk is on exposed hills so warm clothing and usual weatherproof gear, boots and sticks advised.
